Thank You FDR...

Larry and I rolled out of town heading West toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. We loaded up on some BBQ at the famous Applehouse in Linden, VA and set up camp just SW of Harrisonburg at Todd Lake. President Franklin Roosevelt was responsible for the construction of these trails by creating the CCC back in the 1930's. We got there a little later than expected and only had enough daylight for a short ride. Just off the lake was Trimble Mtn., a 2800' peak with a 2 mile climb to the top. What goes up, must come down and we did it at warp speed to avoid getting caught out in the dark. We broke through the dense foliage just in time. We arrived back to the camp and it was dark. Fired up the grill, made a fire and chowed down on brats and tater tots.

Saturday greeted us with loads of sunshine and cool temps in the 30's as we headed just North to Reddish Knob. This classic Western Virginia ride was a must do for me. I've heard so much about it. 10 mile climb up the road to the Knob and then, left turn into the woods and down we go!! Awesome, white knuckle descent that just went on and on. We came across 3 hunting dogs way up on the mountain. One of them was growling and wouldn't let us past. Turns out he had himself a squirrel and was not giving it up! When we did get by, he jumped on our tails and did his best to keep up. After a couple hours of descending, we get spit out on a forest road and guess who's behind us?! That was one badass dog! Lots of hunters up here getting their dogs ready for bear season. They put radio collars on the dogs, the dogs find the bears and the hunters track down the dogs. Then the bear eats the dogs and hunter! Back to camp for burgers and beers. It's raining and cold when I get in the tent, a campers nightmare.
I wake up in a pool of water and it's still raining at 5am. What better to do than huddle under Larry's camper and drink coffee. Things aren't so bad with coffee. The sun comes out about mid morning and we head out to ride on Massanutten Mtn., about 30 miles East. It's Sunday morning and the Mennonite population, pretty much the entire county, is on their way to church. We're kind of on our way to church too. Kennedy Peak and Stephens Trail are heavenly on a chilly, sunny September morning. It's a great way to finish off the weekend.
